A common problem with reduced calorie diets is the nagging hunger that is generally experienced. So understanding which foods and combination of foods that offer optimal satiety be can be ideal for mitigating “diet hunger”. The longer it takes for foods to be digested and absorbed the greater the satiety. Meat, fish and fowl, contain fat and protein.. the two nutrients with the slowest gastrointestinal transit time (slow digesting).

Dr. Michelle Matoff, is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with a doctorate degree (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology. Dr. Matoff has a private practice in San Luis Obispo, CA. She treats adults and seniors and has 23 years of clinical therapeutic experience. She is also an adjunct professor at  Brandman University and an accomplished. published researcher. For patients seeking bariatric surgery Dr. Matoff performs the required pre-operative assessment and evaluation as well as providing individual post-operative bariatric counseling and is now establishing group sessions. Lamees El-Derbi, a Registered Dietitian from Abu-Dhabi, UAE, has been awarded Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science she was recently credentialed as a Board Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC).

Ms. El-Derbi, RD, currently serves as a Bariatric Dietitian at Imperial College London Diabetic Center in Abu-Dhabi. She is an integral member of the multi-disciplinary bariatric surgery team that provides comprehensive care and treatment for patients, pre and post bariatric surgery.  In addition to her clinical responsibilities she has the honor of being the UAE Representative to International Affiliate of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (IAAND). In this international capacity, she has an opportunity to share best dietetic practices with a global community.

Ms. El-Derbi, RD, completed her professional nutrition education at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Canada. Her clinical experience and recognition of the obesity pandemic and the need for specialized competency in bariatric science inspired her post-graduate training and certification with AABC. She has received certificates in Adult, Childhood and Adolescence Weight Management from The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Her training in bariatric science with AABC will further her professional interest in providing best practices for the care and treatment of patients with all forms of obesities.  Ms. Lynema, who now has been a dietitian for almost 10 years, received her nutrition education at Western Michigan University and completed her RD/Dietetic Internship at Michigan State University. Dr. Shaimaa Alasfour, a medical doctor from Kuwait, is the first Kuwaiti to be awarded dual Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science she was recently credentialed as both a Board Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC) and a Board Certified Bariatric Educator (CBE). Her unique qualifications in medicine and public health education provided the prerequisites for dual certifications.

Dr. Alasfour is a Consultant General Practitioner and VP of the Kuwait Lupus Group. Her professional memberships include, Kuwait Medical Association Society, World Organization of Family Doctors, International Bariatric Club, British Obesity Surgery Society, Royal College of General Practitioners, International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and now a senior fellow of
The American Association of Bariatric Counselors and Educators.

She completed her medical training at Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization in Kuwait City and became Certified in Family Medicine at Royal College in London. In addition, she has done specialized fellowships in obesity management in the bariatric unit at Saint Mary Hospital, Imperial College, London.
Dr. Alasfour’s training, experience, scholarship and commitment to public health will further the AABC mission of providing specialized bariatric science education and credentialing standards for the global health community.
