Tanya M. Dunbar-Stone, M.S.Ed., LMSW, a licensed social worker from Hempstead, N.Y., has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in Bariatric Science, she was recently credentialed as a Board-Certified Bariatric Counselor (BCBC).
Mrs. Dunbar-Stone has provided educational and mental health therapeutic services for adults and children for over 20 years. She completed her training and education in both disciplines at Hofstra University, Queens College, and Adelphi University in New York.
For most of her career, she has served as the founder and director of a private childcare and tutorial program. In addition, she is a motivational life-coach, business consultant, and licensed therapist at iListen Counseling, a multi-service private practice which she founded along with her husband, Dr. Lee H. Stone, LCSW, PhD.
In her current practice, Mrs. Dunbar-Stone specializes in issues affecting girls and women of color—with a particular focus on body image, body dysmorphia, and how excessive use of social media impacts self-esteem and mental health. She also provides effective treatment for clients who struggle with obesity and obesity related disorders; her solution-focused, person-centered treatment plans regularly include goals related to healthier lifestyle choices, such as individualized fitness plans and various nutrition, health, and wellness programs.
Recognizing the need for specialized training in Bariatric Science led to her training with AABC. AABC awarded Mrs. Dunbar-Stone with an academic scholarship. Her unique professional training and clinical experience will help fulfill the AABC global mission of providing best practices in the care, treatment, and prevention of obesity and related disorders.
