The pandemic of obesity and the need for specialized Bariatric Science Professionals led to the development of AABC that now has a national and international fellowship. In 2013, the American Medical Association House of Delegates voted and classified obesity as “a disease state with multiple pathophysiological aspects requiring a range of interventions”.

Board Certified Bariatric Professionals are already licensed/certified health and education professionals. They include medical doctors, educators, psychologists, nurses, nutritionists and other disciplines that engage in research, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of obesities and related disorders.

Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors affirms that its follows have successfully completed all requisite training and education and must continue their specialized training and education to maintain Board Certification.
