Jonnie Wilson, MA, NCC, a Nationally Certified (NCC) and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and member of the American Counseling Association and Texas Counseling Association has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science, she was credentialed as a Board-Certified Bariatric Counselor (BCBC).
Ms. Wilson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History from Texas State University. She then earned a Master of Arts in Black, African, and Mexican History from the University of Missouri–Columbia, where she was awarded the prestigious Thurgood Marshall Fellowship. She later completed a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Texas State University.
Currently, Ms. Wilson serves as CEO of Speaking Heart to Heart and Women Wellness Counseling, and operates Jonnie Wilson Counseling Services, LLC, with practice locations in San Marcos and San Antonio, Texas. Her work centers on providing culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health services to marginalized communities, including veterans of color and members of the LGBTQIA community. She also offers specialized military-focused care through Star Behavioral Health as well as conducting clinical research in areas of racial and transgenerational trauma, Black women’s mental health, sexual trauma, and the psychological and emotional components of bariatric care.
Ms. Wilson recognized the need for specialized training in Bariatric Science, which led to a fellowship with AABC. In recognition of her clinical excellence in bariatric care, AABC awarded her an academic scholarship. Her BCBC certification, combined with her extensive professional and clinical experience, helps fulfill the AABC global mission of providing best practices in the care, treatment, and prevention of obesity and related disorders.
