Dr. Nancy Liu, PsyD, a licensed psychologist in the State of California has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science, she was recently credentialed as a Board-Certified Bariatric Counselor (BCBC).
Dr. Liu completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at John F. Kennedy University of Pleasant Hill. She completed an advanced post-doctoral training specializing in Health Psychology at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Her postdoctoral and internship training were both completed in a Neurobehavioral Assessment Program of Portia Bell Hume Center, a community mental health clinic serving underserved, culturally diverse populations.
Dr. Liu has extensive assessment and psychological evaluation experience, including providing pre-surgical psychological evaluations in hospital settings. For the past 8 years she’s served in Kaiser Hospitals of Northern California providing perinatal mental health services and bariatric psychological evaluations. She maintains a part-time private practice offering psychological evaluations and psychotherapy. Her therapeutic approach incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing, and positive psychology. She often supports patients with goal setting, health behavior changes, body image issues, stress and coping strategies.
Recognizing the need for specialized training in Bariatric Science led to her fellowship with AABC. AABC awarded her an academic scholarship. Her extensive professional training and clinical experience will help fulfill the AABC global mission of providing best practices in the care, treatment, and prevention of obesity and related disorders.
