Dr. Richard Straub Joins AABC Advisory Board

The American Association is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Richard Straub to the AABC Advisory Board.

Richard-StraubRichard O. Straub received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Columbia University and after serving as a National Institute of Mental Health fellow at the University of California he joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1979.

Currently Dr. Straub is a professor of psychology, chair of the Behavioral Sciences Department and founder of the graduate program in Health Psychology at the University of Michigan, Dearborn.  He also serves on the board of directors of the Southwest Michigan’s Consortium for Medical Education and regularly lectures in teaching hospitals. AABC RESEARCHERS DISCOVER MAJOR CAUSE OF OBESITY

AABC Research Fellows Identify “The Missing Link”. A New And Important Metric, In Understanding Why Some People Are Thin And Others Thick Despite Similar Caloric Intake.

The American Association of Bariatric Counselors is pleased to announce that two of their research fellows have completed an important bariatric science research project that identifies a primary cause of a most prevalent category of obesity.

The researchers, Dr. Brandon Davis from Grinnell Iowa and Dr. Joseph Indelicato from Queens, NY have recently been informed that their manuscript entitled “Stability of Metabolic Factor Before and After Bariatric Surgery” will be published in Obesity Surgery, the official journal of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders and is currently available online at: http://bit.ly/MetabolicFactorAABC

Ida-Stiliana Gjinali, MS, CBC, a resident of Bayside NY has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program she was credentialed as a Board Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC).

Ms. Gjinali completed her graduate education at Touro College in NYC and received a Master of Science Degree in Mental Health Counseling.  As a post-graduate at Touro she enhanced her education and received an Advanced Certificate in Bariatric Science.

Tessa Craig awarded National Board Certification

Tessa Craig awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC)Tessa Craig, MS, LMFT, LPC, LCDC, has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in Bariatric Science, she was credentialed as a Board Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC) on June 22, 2014.

Tessa received a Master’s Degree in Behavioral Science from Cameron University at Lawton, in Oklahoma. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). Stephen Phillips, Director of Public Policy for the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC), has announced that AABC has successfully met all standards of education, and has become a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider for The Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR). CDR is the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Director Phillips stated that, ìthe Commission’s certification programs are fully accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the accrediting arm of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence based in Washington, D.C. The pandemic of obesity and the need for specialized Bariatric Science Professionals led to the development of AABC that now has a national and international fellowship. In 2013, the American Medical Association House of Delegates voted and classified obesity as “a disease state with multiple pathophysiological aspects requiring a range of interventions”.

Board Certified Bariatric Professionals are already licensed/certified health and education professionals. They include medical doctors, educators, psychologists, nurses, nutritionists and other disciplines that engage in research, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of obesities and related disorders.
