Albert Lichtenstein, PhD, LMFT

Albert Lichtenstein PhD, LMFT, Director of Behavioral Services at the Guthrie Clinic Weight Loss Center in Sayre, PA, has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science, he was recently credentialed as a Board-Certified Bariatric Counselor (BCBC).

Dr. Lichtenstein received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Michigan State University. He has served as Director of Behavioral Services at the Guthrie Weight Loss Center for 12 years. Before that, Dr. Lichtenstein was the Behavioral Science Director at the Guthrie Family Medicine Residency. He is currently a Professor of Psychiatry at the Neuroscience Institute of the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. One of Dr. Lichtenstein’s main interests is in using the Balint Method to help physicians, and other healthcare providers, work through difficult relationships with their patients in order to provide compassionate care. He has been President of the American Balint Society and currently serves as General Secretary of the International Balint Federation. Recognizing the need for specialized training in Bariatric Science led to his fellowship with AABC.

Because of his commitment to bariatric care, AABC awarded him an academic scholarship. His extensive professional training and experience will help fulfill the AABC global mission of providing best practices in the care, treatment, and prevention of obesity and related disorders.
