Louise Petrou CBC, is the first Australian health professional and member of the Australian & New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society, awarded Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science she was recently credentialed as a Board Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC).

Mrs. Petrou is an integral member of the Bariatric Surgery Team at Port Lapsurgery (Mid North Coast Bariatric & Hernia Centre), located in Port Macquarie, New South West Wales, Australia www.portlapsurgery.com.au/.

At Port Lapsurgery, Mrs. Petrou coordinates a patient to patient support program. This unique program offers pre-surgical patients an opportunity to learn from the experiences of post-surgical patients. For remote post-surgery patients Mrs. Petrou offers electronic and phone counseling. Mrs. Petrou’s extensive background in multimedia has enabled Port Lapsurgery to produce public health documentary videos that are used for their innovative patient education program.

While attending a US professional conference, International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders, she became familiar with AABC and the need for specialized training and education.

Her unique scholarship and commitment to patient education will further the AABC global mission of providing best practices in the care, treatment and prevention of obesity and related disorders.

Ayana Gates PA-C Awarded National Bariatric Board Certification

Ayana Gates, PA-C, a Licensed / Certified Physician Assistant from Edinburg, Texas has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science she was recently credentialed as a Board Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC).

Currently at South Texas Heath System in McAllen, TX, she provides comprehensive care and treatment for hospitalized cardiac patients. At AYANA Mind Body Lifestyle, in Edinburg, TX, she performs personalized Functional Medicine consultations and treatments, implements corporate wellness programs and designs, and teaches Pilates and Barre fitness classes.

Ms. Gates received her Masters of Physician Assistant degree from the University of Texas and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Corporate Fitness and Wellness Management.

Her pursuit of life-long learning, recognition of the obesity pandemic and the need for specialized training in bariatric medicine led to her fellowship with AABC. Dr. Denise Hall, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist located in Norfolk, Virginia, has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). Dr. Hall has more than 15 years of experience in private clinical practice with specialty in conducting the requisite psychological assessment and evaluations for patients seeking bariatric surgeries. Case History

Jack had a gastric sleeve surgery and is able to sustain his 75 lb weight-loss for over 4 years His BMI went from 38 to 27 and he no longer had diabetes, or hypertension, had no evidence of disease and was an excellent example of a successful and healthy WLS patient. He was compliant with post-surgery dietary guidelines, and followed a keto styled diet. Being a Southerner he attributed much of his success to his love for BBQ (rib eye steak, baby back ribs, pork belly, pork chops etc).

Symptoms Begin

Several hours after one of his Sunday BBQs he developed a headache. had stomach cramps , became dizzy, nauseous and itchy  He had a sleepless night and just attributed to have eaten something that was spoiled. During that week he started recognizing similar symptoms in the early afternoon and more severe symptoms that would wake him at night. He reported this to his internist who thought it might be related to his gastric sleeve surgery. He made and appointment with his surgeon who then referred him to a GI doctor that performed an upper endoscopy and found nothing that could explain Jacks symptoms and referred him to an allergist. Dr. Dalia Shawer, a pediatrician and licensed clinical nutritionist is the first Egyptian health professional to be awarded Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science she was recently credentialed as a Board Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC).

Dr. Shawer completed her medical training in Pediatrics at Alexandria University in Egypt and her Clinical and Therapeutic Nutrition training from the European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. She also has been Certified as a Lactation Consultant by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants. She specializes in pediatric and adult nutrition and weight management.

Her years of clinical experience in Egypt and Kuwait supports current research that demonstrates that a mother’s nutrition before and during pregnancy can contribute to their baby’s development of obesity. To offer her patients best practices she became a fellow with AABC and completed their specialized training and certification program.

Her scholarship and commitment to public health will further the AABC global mission of providing best practices in the care, treatment and prevention of obesity and related disorders.

Tricia Cooke, a licensed clinical nutritionist-dietitian from Flushing, NY, has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science, she was recently credentialed as a Board Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC).

Cooke is an accomplished health professional with more than a decade of clinical experience counseling patients with complex chronic diseases. She has specialty in weight management and in the treatment of patients pre and post bariatric surgery.

Her training and education includes a BS in Nutrition from Queens College and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Nutrition from New York Institute of Technology. She is a NYS Licensed and Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist, in addition she has been Certified in Adult Weight Management by the Commission of Dietetic Registration.

Recognizing that obesities have biological mechanisms, psychological processes and social influences and requires specialized post-graduate training, she became a fellow with AABC and successfully completed their certification program. Her clinical experience, scholarship and commitment to public health will further the AABC global mission of providing best practices in the care and treatment of those suffering from obesity and related disorders.
