Dr. Michelle Romero, Psy.D

Dr. Michelle Romero, Psy.D, a clinical psychologist from Phoenix, Arizona, has been awarded National Board Certification by the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC). After completing a specialized training and education program in bariatric science, she was recently credentialed as a Board-Certified Bariatric Counselor (CBC).

Dr. Romero received a Bachelor of Science in Social and Behavioral Science from Arizona State University and a Master of Arts in School Psychology and Graduate Certificate in Early Intervention from Northern Arizona University.

She has worked extensively in the educational sector supporting students, staff, and families as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Completing her doctoral training in psychology at Argosy University, she has refocused her clinical skills in the specialized field of bariatrics. Currently, Dr. Romero practices at Honor Health Bariatric Center as a licensed psychologist where she conducts preoperative psychological evaluations, provides bariatric counseling services, and facilitates patient education classes.

Recognizing the need for specialized training in Bariatric Science led to her fellowship with AABC. Because of her commitment to bariatric care, AABC awarded her an academic scholarship. Her extensive professional training and clinical experience will help fulfill the AABC global mission of providing best practices in the care, treatment and prevention of obesity and related disorders.

Nashaat Tawfik, MBA B.Sc. Pharmacy, CBE, Appointed as Global Director of the Centers of Therapeutic Excellence (COTE)

Sheryl Phillips, Director of Standards and Compliance for the American Association of Bariatric Counselors (AABC), is pleased to announce the appointment of Nashaat Tawfik, MBA, B.Sc. Pharmacy, CBE, as the Global Director of the Centers of Therapeutic Excellence (COTE)

Director Tawfik has served as the Obesity Business Director for Novo Nordisk in Saudi Arabia, and previously at Novartis Pharma he headed up the Cardio Metabolic Business Unit. For the past five years he has been an integral member of the COTE Advisory board. As a Certified Bariatric Educator (CBE) he continues to conduct obesity/diabesity training for health professionals and develop community public health programs.

Centers of Therapeutic Excellence, a division of The American Association of Bariatric Counselors, was developed to recognize, accredit, and highlight centers and providers, worldwide, who have kept pace with the bariatric science and dedicated to providing excellent and compassionate therapeutic care for bariatric patients and to provide the public with the guidance to identify trusted and accredited obesity treatment centers.

COTE Board Chairman, Stephen Phillips, stated that because of Director Tawfik’s distinguished stature in the global health and education community, extensive business and administrative experience and commitment to public health education, he is ideally suited to lead all departments of COTE worldwide.
